From the Foreword to Salus (prepared by Perry Pugno, M.D., MPH, CPE, FAAFP, FACEP, FAAPL, Emeritus Vice President for Education, American Academy of Family Physicians):
If ever there was a book written to guide the forward evolution of health in the United States, this is it. . . .
This book was developed and written by a diverse group of senior healthcare professionals from widely based backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences. Drawing from deep knowledge in the basic sciences, clinical medicine, psychology, and sociology, they brought together shared values and a collaborative spirit to craft a comprehensive resource for change.
The Salus Group represents a forum for discussion and exploration based on the “collaborative reflection” by individuals with a broad range of experiences and expertise in multiple health care avenues. Using the well-established “biopsychosocial” model for health care delivery as a foundation, this team built upon the collective experience of many people to bring together this broad-based discussion.
Open-mindedness and mutual respect underpin the robust and wide-ranging viewpoints brought to the forum, seeking common themes and direction for change. History has shown us multiple examples of this sort of forum, from the Parisian Salons to the collectives of mathematicians and physicists in the early 20th century who challenged one another’s knowledge and experience to sort out the mysteries of how the universe functions. They reconsidered old knowledge and beliefs. They moved forward into totally new concepts and ideas. The Salus Group has done that in its consideration of wellness, and both the health care infrastructure and delivery in the U.S. This book represents the essence of those discussions and the central themes that point the way toward functional change.
